But one of the peninsulas most enchanting attractions is also one of its most underratedcenotes.
Cenotes are usually a part of greater underground cave and river systems.

Some are suitable for swimming and snorkeling, while others are best left for serious scuba divers.
Needless to say, we didnt go for a swim.

El Gran is one of the most visited cenotes in the Yucatan, and it can get crowded.
Theres also an on-site area for relaxing and picnicking, as well as restrooms and lockers.
Restrooms, changing areas, and rental gear are available.

Their lush surroundings create a picturesque spot for swimming, snorkeling, and diving in their crystal clear waters.
Cenote Cristal has bathrooms, rentals, and platforms for jumping in.
Theres also a small cliff for diving and wooden decks for lounging.

Visitors will see a variety of wildlife here, including tropical fish, crabs, birds, and more.
For adventurous types, this location is perfect for kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming, and snorkeling.
Admission (150 pesos or $7 USD) provides restrooms, and equipment rentals are available.

Thankfully, attitudes have changed, and it’s now a popular destination.
For a small entry fee, visitors have access to parking, restrooms, and changing areas.
Its great for snorkeling and swimming, and there are shaded areas withpalapasand benches.

Cenote Atik
Atik is just seven miles from the heart of Tulum.
Statues and a wall of skulls invoke the Mayan belief that cenotes are entrances to the underworld.
Visitors can relax in the shade or dine at the restaurant that overlooks the cenote.
