Mount Kineo, with 700-foot (210 m) cliffs rising straight up from the water of Moosehead Lake. It is a peculiar geological formation of flint as well as the country’s largest mass of this rock.

Those who take on the challenge are rewarded with access to some of Maine’s most remote landscapes.

The trick is to travel counterclockwise and take the orange-marked trail up and the blue and white trails down.

Along the way, you’ll pass natural caves you’re able to duck into.
