It turns out, I didnt need to spend all that time tempering my expectations.

For ice climbing, the best ice is generally found in mid-December, January, and February.

The three-week-longSnowDays Festivaltakes place in January and February.

However, the national park limits development, so directly outside the towns are wilderness.

As a result, visitors can enjoy modern comforts while also being surrounded by nature.

Plus,a free shuttlecan take you to all three local ski areas.

My brother and I skied all three mountains during our visit.

If youd rather skate somewhere a bit more wild, check out theoutdoor skating pathway at the Fenlandsin Banff.

For hardcore skiers, a night at theSunshine Mountain Lodge, only accessible by gondola, is a must.

If youre traveling with family, like I was, theLake Louise Innmay be the more realistic choice.
