Formentera is using circular tourism.
We arrived at a completely deserted patch of sand ahead of the cerulean Mediterranean Sea.
Even though it was the beginning of the high season, we were completely alone for the entire morning.

For an island as small as Formentera, this could be disastrous if gone unchecked.
(And the measures have worked, as vehicle traffic has drastically decreased from 2019 to 2023.)
Fortunately, Formentera can be easily explored by bike.

And she’s spot on: I discovered Formentera in its entirety by bike.
One project isFormentera Eco, which is an initiative to safeguard the islands roads during the summer season.
(The plant forms meadows between the surface and around 130 feet deep in high-quality waters.

It is so prized that it was recognized as aUNESCO World Heritage Site.)
Both projects offer benchmarks of the islands model of green tourism.
I witnessed the latter in person during my stay at Teranka Formentera.
