Twenty years ago, Italy began saving its villages by turning them into alberghi diffusi, or scattered hotels.

Now the rest of Europe is following suit.

Today, there are more than 150diffusiin Italy and other European countries are starting to catch on.

Six stone cottages from the early 1900s have been converted into one- and two-bedroom suites.

Excursions include cycling to Lake Vrana, tours and tastings in the surrounding olive groves, or asparagus harvesting.

Appropriately, the rooms set across 13 structures dating to the Middle Ages are decorated in red-wine colors.

The stone walls, terra-cotta floors, and wooden beams of medieval cottages have been preserved.

(The villa also features frescoed ceilings.)
