Our feet did get wet in deeper snow.

The tab on the back of the boots is too small to grip and pull while wearing gloves.

The outsole has excellent traction and was made for rugged trails, and the waterproof membrane was reliable.

The padding is so hefty that they arent as comfortable for more than a few miles.

That also means its important to pair these boots with moisture-wicking socks.

These run a bit tight, so we recommend sizing up unless you prefer thin socks.

They don’t provide the best coverage for intense winter weather and technical traction.

We would appreciate somewhat more arch support.

The warm, high-pile lining has maintained its loft, too.

The sole is thick and well-insulated, and the lugs have excellent tread for a range of conditions.

Salomon has a stiffer midsole/outsole combo that doesnt flex as well over cambered terrain.

We walked through several inches of water on multiple occasions and never felt any extra chill or waterproofing failure.

We recommend sizing up a half-size as they fit a bit narrow.

We did feel like they were somewhat narrow, and would recommend sizing up.

Regardless, the four boots below are still good options for plenty of hikers and are worth mentioning.

However, they did take longer to break in than most others.

Testers took notes on everything from immediate out-of-the-box impressions to comfort, fit accuracy, traction, and waterproofing.

Our testers noted the temperature and terrain of their hikes, as well as weather conditions.

Look for specialized rubber compounds like Vibram Arctic Grip for enhanced winter-ready grip and stability.
