From low-pile mid-layers to ultra-cozy top layers, these are our favorite fleece jackets for women.

Thats not to say theyre all made equally.
The elastic around the hips could be a little tight for some.
The difference between wearing a coat alone and a coat with this fleece underneath was huge.

The fleece itself is exceptionally soft.
Its designed for a regular, hip-length fit with a full zipper for maximum versatility.
The design is fairly plain and there are only two colors to choose from.

The exterior is fluffy, plush, high-pile fleece, while the inside is lined with soft jersey.
In particular, we liked that theres plenty of breathing room around the abdomen area.
We liked the giant zippered front pocket, which provides ample room for hands and valuables.
If you have shorter arms, bear in mind that the sleeves are quite long.
Other features include an elastic hem and cuffs, and two slip-in hand pockets.
Finally, the fleece remained unchanged in feel and appearance after machine washing and drying.
Although we think its worth it, it is more of an investment piece.
Its meant as a mid-layer for running orhiking in cold weather.
Raglan sleeves also help prevent chafing whenwearing a backpackby allowing for greater underarm movement.
We loved the fitted hood, which traps warmth effectively while also fitting seamlessly under an outer hood.
Extended cuffs with thumbholes to keep your hands and wrists warm are another highlight.
The fleece also boasts zippered hand pockets and can be machine washed.
Color choices are limited.
Its made from soft brushed fleece, with a nice weight and a flattering drape.
The fit is deliberately oversized, with an extra-length hem that covers the hips and bottom.
We think this feature is fairly unique for a fleece and loved how stylish it lookedover jeansand leggings alike.
We also liked the unusual curved hem.
One thing to be aware of: with no lining, the coat doesnt block wind completely.
This makes it more of an urban fashion choice for mid-fall than for extreme cold or technical outdoor sports.
Its machine washable and dryer safe, and comes in cream, olive, or navy.
Its not warm enough to wear on its own on colder days.
We found that it fit as expected and liked that we could cinch the hem using the adjustable drawcord.
If youre between sizes, size up for layering space and unhindered freedom of movement.
We found it to be comfortable and warm, but it shed a significant amount of fluff when washed.
However, its not particularly breathable and the sizing runs small.
However, its too thin to be warm when worn on its own for everyday use during shoulder season.
Each fleece was then worn for at least three two-hour wears.
We wore them for a range of different activities, from commuting to traveling to hiking and running errands.
Exactly how much warmth you require depends on your chosen activity and season.
My top tip for comfort?
Choose a fleece with a slightly oversized fit that allowsspace for layeringwithout restricting movement, especially around your shoulders.
But for all other occasions (like hiking or jogging), some breathability is key.
Look for products that specifically mention breathability and performance materials.
A fitted hood is most effective for this purpose.
But if my outer coat has one, its not as important on my fleece.
One feature I always appreciate?
Elasticated cuffs and hems that can be cinched tight to keep out cold drafts.
Generally, the higher the pile, the warmer the fleece will be.
A fleece jacket should be comfortable and provide full freedom of movement.
But for more casual fleeces with a 100-percent polyester content, I prefer a regular to slightly oversized fit.
This prevents the likelihood of tightness around the shoulders, underarms, and torso.
It also increases versatility by allowing space for a variety of layers underneath.
For this reason, I always size up if Im between measurements on the brands size guide.
Fleece jackets are usually fairly low maintenance, especially if theyre made from pure polyester.
Most of the jackets I own can be machine washed on a cool setting and tumble dried on low.
Shes also packed fleeces for cold-weather expeditions to destinations ranging from Arctic Norway to the Yukon.
