Grand Rapids, Michigan, is the unlikely home to one of spring’s best floral displays.

The trees and their blossoms known in Japan as sakura are celebrated with viewing parties each spring.

Typically the blooms peak in April.

The tea ceremony, orchanoyu, is led by tea masters who use original works of Shigaraki pottery.

The gardens and sculpture park are open daily, year-round.

It is less than 10 minutes from downtown Grand Rapids and just over two hours from Detroit.
